Established in 1985, the Leigh Rugby Union Bowling Section is a thriving and welcoming community club based at Leigh RUFC, Hand Lane.
What began as a small group of enthusiastic bowlers without a home green has grown into one of the area's most active crown green bowling clubs, thanks to the dedication and hard work of generations of volunteers.
Today, the club provides opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to enjoy sport, social interaction and outdoor recreation in a friendly and inclusive environment.
With around 150 regular participants, including competitive and social bowlers, the section supports physical activity, mental wellbeing and community cohesion throughout the bowling season.
The club welcomes members of all ages and abilities, providing a safe and inclusive environment where friendships are formed, skills are developed, and people can remain active throughout their lives.
The bowling green itself was created and continues to be maintained through volunteer effort.
In recent years, the club has invested significantly in its facilities, including the installation of modern energy-efficient LED floodlights, improvements to the tea room and kitchen facilities, upgrades to the toilet block, and the provision of wind shelters around the green.
These enhancements have improved comfort, accessibility and sustainability while helping to extend playing opportunities throughout the season.
The club is committed to environmental sustainability through the use of battery-powered grounds maintenance equipment, energy-efficient lighting, biodiversity enhancements and are making plans to harvest rainwater for irrigation.
The club is run almost entirely by volunteers who contribute thousands of hours each year towards maintaining the green, improving facilities, organising competitions and supporting members.
The club fields a number of teams competing across local leagues, including the Hindley League, Atherleigh Ladies League, Newton Seniors League, Pennine Utilities League, Leigh Veterans League, Parks League and Friday Night League.
This extensive programme provides competitive opportunities for bowlers of all ages and abilities while helping to strengthen connections with clubs and communities across the wider area.
Members benefit from a welcoming tea room, modern toilet facilities, wind shelters and a comfortable social environment that encourages participation both on and off the green.
Our vision is to create one of the most sustainable and accessible bowling facilities in the region, ensuring the club remains a valuable community asset for future generations.
The high standard of the green and facilities has been recognised through the hosting of county-level matches and local competitions.
Beyond bowling, the section plays an important role within the wider community, organising social events, charity activities and opportunities for people to connect, make friends and stay active.
Set within a peaceful semi-rural location surrounded by nature, Leigh Rugby Union Bowling Section offers far more than just bowling.
It provides a welcoming community hub where people can enjoy sport, friendship, wellbeing and relaxation in a safe and attractive environment.
Through continued investment in facilities, sustainability initiatives and community engagement, the club is ensuring that crown green bowling remains accessible and enjoyable for generations to come.
