Clinical performance hoists Leigh up to 7th position in League

Leigh entertained Manchester Medics at Hand Lane yesterday – another Club that they have never played before at First Team level.

The Medics are a young, lightweight, sprightly side and they had the best of the early exchanges. They were duly rewarded for their efforts and their enthusiasm and went into a six points to nil lead, after fifteen minutes, through two penalty goals.

Leigh’s superior size and strength, however, were soon to take their toll and impressive carries from Crompton, Boyle and Summers became the order of the day, with line breaks being made all across the park.

Pressure close to the Medics line, on twenty minutes, produced an unconverted try for Chris Boyle, from a five metre scrum and this was quickly followed by another unconverted try for Marcus Morris-Williams, when an overlap was created, wide out, on the left hand side.

Leigh led at half time by ten points to six.

Leigh came out full of confidence in the second half and started to put some good phases of play together.

A particularly slick, backs, move got Ollie Shepherd over the line down the right hand flank for a cracking try, which was very well converted from wide out by Rob Drake.

The Leigh pressure continued to mount and a five metre scrum produced a try for Calvin Crompton, who drove over for the fourth try that gained Leigh a bonus point. Rob Drake again slotted the conversion.

The final try was one to savour – a Rob Drake special from thirty metres out. Rob received the ball and cleverly dummied and stepped his way through the floundering Medics defence to dot the ball down to give himself an easy conversion.

Final score Leigh 31 Manchester Medics 6.

A very clinical performance from this ever improving Leigh side, they are prepared to let the ball do the work and on yesterday’s performance will, hopefully, pose some serious threats to the opposition in the coming weeks and months.

Next week they travel away to take on third placed Anselmians.
