Drake stars as Leigh suffer ninth defeat.

Leigh travelled away to Vale hoping to register their first win of the season and put in a very creditable performance but unfortunately came up short playing into the gale force wind and rain in the second half.
Vale started the stronger of the two sides and threatened the Leigh line several times in the first fifteen minutes but a resolute Leigh defence kept them out and their only reward was a penalty goal.
The remainder of the half was dominated by Leigh and they soon responded on 25 minutes when a masterful chip through by Rob Drake was pounced on like ‘Korky the Cat’ by Kieran Duffy to score wide out on the left. Rob Drake narrowly missed the conversion.
The pressure intensified for the remainder of the half but Leigh, unfortunately, could not add any more points to their tally and went off at half time leading 5 points to 3.
The second half was a different tale. Vale came out in a more determined mood and the elements also changed to give them a big advantage. The wind picked up from behind their backs and the rain pelted down and Leigh found it hard to get out of their half.
Vale drove over the Leigh line for a converted try after 49 minutes and quickly added a penalty to their tally after 55 minutes.
A pushover try quickly followed this, which was also converted by their Centre. Vale 20 Leigh 5.
From the restart, Leigh got deep into the Vale half and after good approach work, Rob Drake floated a magnificent long ball out to Ollie Shepherd on the right wing for him to scamper in for a brilliant unconverted try.
The rest of the half turned into a dour arm wrestle with Vale pressing and Leigh valiantly defending with only three more points being added to the scoreboard on 77 minutes when Vale slotted over a penalty to seal the victory. Vale 23 – Leigh 10.
This was a much-improved performance by all the Leigh team who played with a lot of heart and dogged determination. Man of the Match was Rob Drake who put in a brilliant all round performance in both attack and defence.
Next week, Leigh entertain Rochdale, who are sitting in eighth place and fifteen points above them, at Hand Lane.
