Eccles not allowed to ‘have their cake and eat it’.

Leigh’s survival campaign is well and truly still on track after another workmanlike victory at home against Eccles.

This was always going to be a tight match with neither side wanting to make any mistakes and that set the tone for the afternoon.

The first quarter of the match was an interesting tussle but it was Eccles who were the first to break the deadlock when they split the Leigh defence to score a converted try under the Leigh posts after twenty-two minutes. Rob Drake stepped up to the mark to slot a penalty on thirty-two minutes to narrow the margin to four points. However, the killer blow came on the stroke of half time, when Leigh were awarded a penalty try for Eccles collapsing a scrum on their line. Elliott Ryan added the conversion and the teams went off at half time with Leigh leading ten points to seven.

Leigh were quick to add to their tally, just after the break, when Chris Boyle crashed over for a try following good work in the lineout. Elliott Ryan stepped up again to convert the try from wide out on the left.

The remainder of the half became a dour arm wrestle with neither side really asserting itself but the most important thing for Leigh was that they were victorious.

This win takes Leigh to tenth place in the Table, two places away from the drop zone. Hopefully, two or three more wins should be enough to keep them up this season.

Next week, Leigh are at home to Vale of Lune, who are currently fifth in the Table but on this form Leigh will be hoping for another win to cement their place in North One West.
