Another solid performance seals victory away at Broughton Park to make it three in a row.

Leigh travelled to Broughton Park without Matt Newton, Chris Boyle, Jimmy Wilkinson and Kieran Duffy from last week and were forced to make another, last minute, change to the starting line-up, when Alex Middleton-Adams was forced to withdraw from the squad on Saturday morning. Karl Lawrinson, our veteran Director of Rugby, took his place at No. 8.

Leigh took the game to Broughton Park from the first whistle and were duly rewarded for their efforts when, after seven minutes of relentless pressure, Rob Drake drew the Broughton Park defence to send Ross Shepherd flying through a hole to ground the ball under the Broughton Park posts. Elliott Ryan stepped up to add the extras with the conversion.

Leigh’s lead was extended, five minutes later, when Elliott Ryan slotted a penalty to take Leigh into a ten points to nil lead.

This seemed to prompt Broughton Park into action and they soon responded through a converted try down their right wing following some sloppy Leigh tackling wide out.

Broughton Park rallied and went into the lead, after thirty-three minutes, when a poor clearance kick by Leigh allowed Park to craft an overlap down the left to go over for an unconverted try.

Half time Broughton Park 12 Leigh 10.

The second half was a completely different story and it was all about Leigh. They were quick to retake the lead, after forty-three minutes, when Elliott Ryan curled in another penalty, quickly followed by another on fifty-three minutes, to put Leigh four points in front.

The remaining twenty-seven minutes of the match was all about Leigh controlling possession. Time and time again they pounded the Broughton Park defence but unfortunately, they could not turn their efforts into points.

This was another, all round, solid and determined performance by all of the Leigh squad. Man of the Match, chosen by Broughton Park, was Marcus Morris-Williams, who really put in a solid shift but David Wood, David Penn and Rob Drake, who all stood out in this very workmanlike victory, closely followed him for effort.

Special mention, however, must go out to the ‘Owd Fella’, Karl Lawrinson, who really stepped up to the plate to put in a very creditable sixty minute cameo. Well done Karl and thank you!

Next week, Leigh entertain Eccles, at home, who are currently one place but fourteen points above them in the League.

Can we make it four in a row to further our survival campaign?
