Newly promoted side romp to victory at Round Ash Park

Leigh First Team welcomed back newly promoted St. Benedicts to Round Ash Park yesterday.

The Cumbrians were in no mood to lose this game right from the start and after 15 minutes of constant pressure they recorded their first League try of the season when they scored an unconverted try wide out on the left.

This seemed to give Leigh a wake up call and they had the better of the next 15 minutes and narrowed the gap on 30 minutes when Rob Drake slammed over a penalty from 35 metres out.

This brought an immediate response from St. Benedicts and they came back up the field to score another unconverted try, this time by the right hand corner flag.

Leigh pulled back three points on 38 minutes, again through a well struck Rob Drake penalty but unfortunately St. Benedicts came straight back at Leigh and scored a try under the Leigh posts but amazingly missed the conversion.

The teams went off at half time with the score Leigh 6 St. Benedicts 15.

The second half commenced and Leigh again got the better of the early exchanges and were rewarded with another three points from the trusty boot of stand off, Rob Drake.

St. Benedicts extended their lead on 63 minutes with a converted try under the Leigh sticks quickly followed by another try wide out on the right which was brilliantly converted from the touchline.

From this point on the Cumbrian lads were on a roll and they added two more converted tries before the end to register a bonus point win in their opening match in North One West.

Final score Leigh 9 St. Benedicts 43.

This was a hard day at the office for the Leigh side but they never gave up and played some decent rugby in patches.

They will definitely have to ‘up their game’ next week when they travel away to face Kirkby Lonsdale, who yesterday beat Blackburn 27 – 14 in their opening game.
