Leigh travelled to Altrincham Kersal yesterday to play a side in search of their first win of the season and I’m sure that the players and the travelling spectators alike were all quietly hoping for a victory but alas, it was not to be. Instead, Leigh went down to a much more structured and well drilled, Altincham Kersal, outfit.
The first 25 minutes was nip and tuck with both sides testing each other out but it was AK who broke the deadlock when they managed to drive over the Leigh line for a converted try which was quickly followed by a penalty, from their Centre, when Leigh were caught offside in the midfield.
The teams went off at half time with the score AK 10 Leigh 0.
Leigh gifted AK their next seven points, on 52 minutes, when a speculative Leigh pass was intercepted, for AK to score a converted try.
Another seven points were added to the AK tally on 60 minutes when a good break from their backs produced their third converted try.
Leigh were quick to reply to this when Chris Boyle broke blind, from a scrum 15 metres out and fed Alex Leadbetter, who in turn, slipped a brilliant pass to Danny Crompton, for him to crash over, close to the corner flag, for a try, which was brilliantly converted by Elliott Ryan. Unfortunately, Alex Leadbetter was injured in this passage of play and had to leave the field. The Club’s best wishes go out to Alex for a speedy recovery.
AK bounced back immediately to score their fourth converted try to earn them a bonus point and to put the game outside of Leigh’s reach.
Leigh got some consolation in the 79th minute, when Chris Boyle barged his way through for a try, which was again well converted by the trusty boot of Elliott Ryan.
Leigh will have an awful lot to work on in training this week, for which a full turn out is a must, if they hope to give high flying, Birkenhead Park any problems next Saturday when they come to Round Ash Park in Round 5 of the League.
Final Score AK 31 Leigh 14.
