First Team Suffer Fifth Defeat and drop to bottom place in the League

Leigh travelled to Wilmslow yesterday with high hopes following their encouraging performance last week against Birkenhead Park but unfortunately came up short against a much more structured and physically fit, Wilmslow side.

The first half was a very evenly matched affair with both sides cancelling each other out but it was Wilmslow who broke the deadlock, just before half time, when their scrumhalf, Nick Barker, dummied his way through from 20 metres out to score a try which was well converted by their fly half, Bob MacCallum.

The Wilmslow Wolves had got a taste of blood now and extended their lead, six minutes into the second half, when they won a scrum against the head and drove over the Leigh line from 5 metres out for an unconverted try. 12 – 0.

Leigh reduced the deficit, on 57 minutes, through an Elliott Ryan penalty but Wilmslow continued to dominate and savage the Leigh defence for the rest of the match.

Their next points came on 70 minutes when their very impressive full back, Ben Day, came into their line and fed a supporting player who cantered over for a converted try to extend their lead to sixteen points.

It was Ben Day, again, who added the final bite from the Wolves, when he hit the line to crash over for their bonus point-winning try on 75 minutes.

Final score Wilmslow 24 Leigh 3.

This was a spirited performance from the Leigh side but they seem to be lacking any clear direction and structure at the moment.

There is no game next Saturday, 15th October. The next match is on 22nd October at home against Blackburn.
