Leigh travelled away to Rochdale yesterday to face a side determined to remain in North One West and Rochdale came away with the spoils.
Rochdale racked up eleven points in the first seventeen minutes through two penalties and a well worked, unconverted try.
Their lead was extended through a converted try on thirty eight minutes but Leigh rallied, on the stroke of half time, to add an unconverted try of their own, when Iain Wood crashed over to take the sides off at the break with Rochdale leading by eighteen points to five.
Leigh narrowed the deficit, after 53 minutes, when Ross Shepherd got the ball out to Kieran Duffy who finished well down the right hand flank for an unconverted try.
Rochdale bounced back to score a converted try from a five metre scrum, when Leigh were down to fourteen men, to make the score 25 – 10 with twenty minutes to go.
Leigh threw all they had at Rochdale in this last twenty minutes and were rewarded, with almost the last play of the game, when Ross Shepherd gathered a long pass from Elliott Ryan to scorch away from 45 metres out to score a fine individual try which was converted by Elliott Ryan.
Final Score Rochdale 25 Leigh 17.
Next week, Leigh are at home to Vale of Lune. K.O. 3 p.m.
