Leigh entertained Sefton at Hand Lane yesterday and it was always going to be a hard one to plan for, as it has been many years since the two Clubs last competed at First Team Level.
It was ‘nip and tuck’ for the first twenty minutes, until good front foot ball was presented to Rob Drake, from a scrum, enabling him to ghost his way through the Sefton defence and find his brother Johnny in close support, for him to scorch away for the opening try, which was it turn, duly converted by Rob.
Sefton were quick to counter this and replied with a penalty on twenty-five minutes. Leigh 7 Sefton 3.
Full back, Ollie Shepherd, seized upon a loose Sefton pass to dribble through and re-gather on thirty two minutes for a well taken opportunistic try, which was again converted by Rob Drake.
After early domination in the second half, Leigh were awarded a penalty, 30 metres out, which was slotted by Rob Drake to extend the lead to 17 – 3, which he soon added to, on fifty five minutes, when he slotted another penalty to stretch the lead to 20 – 3.
A yellow card was awarded to a Leigh player, soon after this and whilst the Leigh player was off the field Sefton capitalised on their one-man advantage to go over for two tries, one of which was converted, to narrow the deficit to five points.
20 -15.
Leigh, however, came back strongly with a late rally and a well taken try in the dying minutes, from Marcus Morris-Williams, sealed their first victory of the season to take the two sides off with the final score at Leigh 25 Sefton 15.
A good solid performance from the Leigh lads, which they will now be hoping to carry forward into next week’s game, away to New Brighton, who are currently sitting at the bottom of the League.
