Leigh visited their old adversaries, Winnington Park, for the first time for many years, earlier today and came away with memories that they would soon like to erase.
Winnington Park had the first points on the board, through a converted try, on fifteen minutes but Rob Drake soon pulled three points back for Leigh, with a penalty, two minutes later.
Winnington Park restored the margin, in the twenty fourth minute, with a penalty of their own and then extended their lead, through a well taken, unconverted try, following another great run from their full back, swiftly followed by another penalty, to put them eighteen points to three in front.
A scintillating break from Rob Drake, in the thirty ninth minute, found big Centre, Frankie Halton in close support, for him to stretch his legs and gallop away for a brilliant try, from fifty five metres out, to take the sides off for their oranges with Winnington Park leading by eighteen points to eight.
Winnington Park ramped up the volume, after the break, to quickly add a converted try but Leigh managed to respond to this, by building several phases of their own, in which Alex Leadbettter waved his magic wand, again, to find Rob Drake hitting a perfect line, for him to crash over for an excellent try, under the Winnington Park sticks, which he also converted, in the sixtieth minute.
Winnington Park 25 Leigh 15.
Two further penalties by Winnington Park, in the sixty second and the sixty eighth minutes, put the game out of Leigh’s reach but a lucky bounce, from a speculative kick through, resulted in Winnington Park going over for their fourth try of the game in the last minute, to earn them a well deserved bonus point win.
Final score Winnington Park 38 Leigh 15.
There is no game next week for the First Team but they entertain Glossop at Hand Lane, K.O. 3 p.m. on Saturday 13th October.
