Thirteen try, bonus point bonanza.

Leigh RUFC hosted a Past Players Luncheon for 87 before yesterday’s home match against ninth placed Winnington Park and then the Current Leigh Players produced a dazzling display to cap off a truly memorable day for the Club.

Leigh came out of the blocks firing on all cylinders and soon had some points on the scoreboard when Jimmy Wilkinson scored down the left wing, in the first minute, for an unconverted try.

Matty Rudd skilfully stepped his way through a bewildered Winnington Park defence four minutes later for an excellent try, which he also converted. 12 – 0.

Marcus Morris-Williams was the next player to cross the line, following a good break by Charlie Wood in the twentieth minute, with Jimmy Wilkinson and Matty Rudd quickly adding their second tries of the game only minutes later, with Matty Rudd adding all three conversions.

Jamie King added a well taken try just before the break, again converted by Matty Rudd, to take the sides off at the half way mark with Leigh leading by forty points to nil.

The second half just continued in a similar vein with Winnington Park being well beaten up front.

Leigh added seven more tries in this second period from Osh Griffiths, Chris Boyle, Sam Holgate, Jack Burdon, Matty Rudd (with a brilliant interception from seventy metres out, to complete his hat trick for the day), Dan Hunter and Jamie King, who crossed for his second of the game. Matty Rudd converted six of the above, to finish the game with a personal tally of thirty-seven points from three tries and eleven conversions, which deservedly earned him the Man of the Match Award.

Next week Leigh travel away to Cumbria to face eleventh placed Aspatria who Leigh beat 32 – 18 at Leigh earlier in the season.
