Despite a stuttering first half performance on a sticky pitch, Leigh recovered their composure to record a solid victory against bottom club Fleetwood , which maintained their long unbeaten sequence.
Leigh started well and recorded two penalties from young full back Elliott Ryan. But then the home side belied their lowly league status with a stunning passage of play.
Firstly their forwards drove over for flanker Pye to score a converted try. Then an excellent counter attack combined with poor Leigh defence saw pacy winger Phillips sore under the posts, for a 14—6 lead.
Leigh now had to regroup, and this they did. Ryan recorded a third penalty and forward pressure on the stroke of the interval, sucked in the defence to allow winger Ross Shepherd to score a converted try, and restore a lead, Leigh were not to surrender.
The second half was a different story as Leigh took complete control of possession. The tactics were not pretty on the heavy pitch, but they were effective. Ryan kicked two more penalties, before the game was sealed when Paul Hampson and David Wood provided the opening for Peter Ince to score an unconverted try.
Leigh had to withstand late pressure with Penn and Dyson in the bin for technical offences, but in the end the excellent goal kicking of Ryan, and good ball retention saw the side home.
