Leigh lost their long unbeaten run , but won great praise from coaches and spectators for an excellent performance against title chasing Vale.

Leigh endured a nightmare in the first ten minutes as the Vale backs tore them apart. Firstly scrum half Wilson dummied his way under the posts, then flyer Royle went the full length of the field, and finally Hodder scored the third for a seventeen point lead.

Leigh looked ready for the slaughter, but now began the fight back. Elliot Ryan kicked a simple penalty, and scrum half David Wood sold a dummy to score by the posts. Leigh then produced the try of the game, when Wood and Peter Ince combined superbly from a line- out to send Calvin Crompton under the posts for a converted try which levelled the match.

Leigh began the second period as they had ended the first, but the home side began their own recovery. A few minor errors, and soft penalties allowed Vale back into the game.
They were now beginning to dominate field position, which was to prove vital. After a penalty to each side, the Leigh defence held firm, but were undone by two late penalties.

Leigh were obviously disappointed to lose a game they looked likely to win midway through the second period , but were pleased to savage a losing bonus point after the disastrous start.
