So close yet so far...

Leigh may have had an excellent finish to last season with 8 wins from 10 but since then we have had a torrid time.

Last weeks defeat against Birkenhead Park was our fifth league loss in a row, our worst losing streak for some time.

However, the situation is not as bad as it may seem. The injury and unavailability list has had a direct correlation to our results and we have met up with some very good teams. The loss of Adam Dyson for the rest of the season has not helped the situation much either

It was on the back of this losing streak that the team took to the field.

Leigh 30 v Warrington 32

This was to be another fiercely-contested NorthOneWest match at Round Ash Park as both Warrington and Leigh went for full match points
Warrington started the stronger but Leigh were first to put points on the board with a penalty. Warrington replied with an unconverted try that was quickly cancelled out by a converted Leigh try.

Penalties for both teams took the score to 13-8 at half time

Peter Ince scored a converted try just to the left hand side of the post in the opening few minutes of the second half which was followed by a Warrington penalty two minutes later to put the score at 20-11
Following a quick tap penalty by Graham Robinson the ball was moved wide and Jermaine Allan took a flat ball and powered over the line to give Leigh a lead of 25-11

Another converted try to Warrington brought them back into the game. This score brought about wave after wave of Warrington pressure and Leigh gave away yet more penalties with Warrington turning down the easy 3 points to go for the try line.
They were rewarded with a converted try under the posts to draw level with Leigh at 25-25.

Leigh could see all their hard work going to waste and immediately went on the offensive and kicked their way up field. A try in the corner to give a 30-25 lead looked to be enough with only two minutes remaining.

Warrington however, had other ideas and threw everything they had at Leigh. A try under the posts with a well worked inside pass to a prop at full flight in the last seconds of play made the score to 30-30. The last kick of the game sealed Leighs fate.

The result saw Leigh continue their losing streak but they are far from down.
The Leigh faithful, although disappointed with the score lines still have a positive attitude and are giving their full backing to the team. The general consensus amongst the post match bar discussions being, “stopping the penalties” and keeping “15 men on the field” would go some way in helping us. There is a lot of rugby to be played this season and it’s is only a matter of time before the rub of the green comes our way….

Next week CARLISLE away.
