Leigh entertained their old adversaries De La Salle (Salford) yesterday at Hand Lane. For the second week on the run the weather conditions were atrocious but credit must go to both teams who put on an excellent display despite this.
Jack Martin was drafted into the Leigh side to play scrum half and he put on a dazzling display on his debut.
De La Salle took the game to Leigh from the start and had the better of the opening exchanges but it was Leigh who were first to score, when good hands created an overlap wide out on the right, for Kieran Duffy to slide in for a well-constructed finish.
A Rob Drake penalty on the stroke of half time took the sides off with Leigh leading by eight points to nil.
Leigh turned around with the wind and rain in their faces but Kieran Duffy beat the elements and the De La Salle defence to get over for his second try of the game on forty-five minutes.
De La Salle worked hard to turn the tide and Leigh worked tirelessly in defence to keep them at bay but De La Salle were eventually rewarded for their efforts, in the sixty third minute, when they crossed for a well-deserved, converted try.
The final minutes were very tense with both sides toiling away but Leigh managed to keep De La Salle out to emerge worthy winners by thirteen points to seven.
Next week Leigh travel to Winnington Park, who are one place and three points behind them in the League K.O. 2.15 p.m.
