League Leaders Take The Spoils.

Leigh welcomed League leaders, Anselmians, to Round Ash Park yesterday in what promised to be an exciting game of rugby. The spectators were not disappointed.

Anselmians got the first points on the board with a penalty on 5 minutes but Leigh fought back and rocked Anselmians through a well taken try by Duffy in the right hand corner in the 18th minute which Rob Drake converted.

This galvanised Anselmians and they responded with two converted tries in the next ten minutes to put them ahead by seventeen points to seven.

Leigh rallied again following this onslaught and reduced the margin when Rob Drake set off on an arc, to put Kieran Duffy into space on the right wing, for him to skilfully draw the defence and slip the ball inside to the supporting Alex Leadbetter, who scorched over for an excellent try, which was duly converted by Rob Drake.

A Rob Drake penalty in the 36th minute levelled the scores but then a brilliant, breakaway try by Alex Leadbetter, again converted by Rob Drake, put Leigh into a seven points lead with two minutes left of the first half.

However, Anselmians got over the line for an unconverted try in the final play of the half to take the sides off with Leigh leading by twenty four points to twenty two.

Leigh registered the first points of the second half through an early Rob Drake penalty but it was the side from Eastham Village who were to dominate the second half, notching up three converted tries to take them into a convincing sixteen points lead.

Leigh never gave up the fight and combined well, just before the final whistle, to get Joe Murphy over for a try, wide out on the right, converted by Rob Drake, to earn them a well deserved, losing bonus point by scoring four tries.

Final Score Leigh 34 Anselmians 43.
