Leigh 21 v Aspatria 14
Leigh came out on top in a hard fought win against a useful Aspatria outfit.
It took 15 minutes of sustained Leigh pressure before registering their first points with a Drake penalty, this was soon followed by Leigh's two props combining well for Baker to put McCabe over the line for a converted try.
The visitors answered with two penalties to get them back in contention at 10-6. Drake then stroked over another penalty in the 37th minute to increase Leigh's lead.
On the stroke of half time scrum half Woods who had an outstanding game burst through the Aspartia defence, sold a dummy to his opposite number and gave Duffy a clear run to the try line.
Half time Leigh 18 Aspatria 6.
The second half was a dour affair with both sides squandering scoring chances, however, to Leigh's credit, against a much larger pack they bossed the set scrums with a rejuvenated Baker outstanding.
The lively visitors backs eventually got on the score sheet with a try in the 74th minute. Drake then slotted over a penalty in the 78th minute and the game ended by Aspatria converting a further penalty leaving the final score at Leigh 21 Aspatria 14.
Too many penalties by Leigh and a lack of discipline almost cost Leigh this game.
