Fleetwood 31 Leigh 36

In nigh on perfect conditions for open rugby Leigh shared ten tries with an in form Fleetwood outfit.

Leigh, after five minutes, quickly gained the upper hand when constant possession and territorial advantage allowed David Woods decisive pass to split the Fleetwood defence to put Paul Trumble over the line and this was converted by Rob Drake. At this stage of the game it was all Leigh, however, the first warning shots came from Fleetwood when their lively backs broke from deep to score a fine try.
Leigh responded well when the ball was moved out quickly to Keiron Duffy who cut back inside beating a three man cover to dive over.
This see-saw game put Fleetwood level when, with a neat chip over the advancing Leigh defence the ball stood up nicely for their speedy centre to race under the Leigh posts to level at twelve all.
A big hit by the Leigh flanker across the chest of Fleetwoods hooker, as proven in the video, lead to the hooker leaving the field and Leigh gaining the upper hand.
The first half ended when Rob Drake put Leigh back in front with a penalty.

The home side showed they meant business with a point a minute salvo in the first fourteen minutes of the second half.
Leigh, again reduced to fourteen men, were certainly under the cosh.
Digging deep into their reserves the Leigh pack with David Penn outstanding drove Fleetwood back with a controlled rolling maul, which ended with Ian Wood getting the final touch down, this was again converted by Rob Drake.
Leigh now had their tails up with their superior fitness beginning to show, although the Fleetwood backs, particularly their half backs were always a threat.
Olly Shepherd on the left wing, who had barely had a pass all afternoon, was given space to show his class racing down the wing cutting inside to score behind the posts.
Probably the try of the match came from Keiron Duffy, following a long clearance kick by Fleetwood that was gathered deep in his own half off his leg, as proved by the video, then seemingly raced through the entire Fleetwood team to waltz unopposed under the posts.
Back came never say die Fleetwood to end the match with a try by their left winger to close what could be described as a reasonable but sometimes sloppy performance by Leigh.

However, 5 tries and 5 points on the road when you are not at your best gives additional optimism for the future and we look forward to another away game at Heaton Moor next week.
