LEIGH GRIND OUT A VICTORY

Leigh's match with Aldwinians, who were on an eight game winning run, facing up to Leigh who were unbeaten this season, was always going to be a close encounter.
The first forty minutes belonged to Leigh who enjoyed both possession and territorial advantage. Leigh had numerous chances to breach the home line but were held in check by Aldwinians resolute defence.
Approaching half time, the home side gave Leigh some indication of their attacking skills with some flowing movements, penetrating into the Leigh territory. With the game now see-sawing from end to end, Rob Drake gave Leigh a three points lead, slotting over a penalty to give a slim half time lead of 3 - 0

With the second half barely under way, Leigh's pack secured quality ball, that was quickly moved out to the ever alert Olly Sheperd who raced under the posts. Rob Drake added the conversion.
Once again with the entire Aldwinians side, seemingly having forty winks, full back Jimmy Wilkinson skipped through the opposition to score out wide, again converted by Rob Drake.
A further penalty put Leigh twenty points to the good and at 20-0 this should have been a stroll in the park.
Unfortunately this was not to be. It was now backs to the wall and all hands to the pumps as Aldwinians ramped up their game.Leigh soaked up wave after wave of attack but a well deserved try and a further positive forward drive put the home side to within six points of Leigh.
The last 10 mins brought out the resilient best in Leigh with cover tackling and determination to win any loose ball keeping their line intact to finish the match with a well deserved victory.

Outstanding for Leigh was Chris Morgan at flanker and a solid defence game by Ross Shepherd at centre.

Many thanks to Aldwinians committee and spectators who went out of their way to provide an enjoyable afternoon and we look forward to welcoming them to Round Ash Park in January.
