FESTIVE CHEER FOR LEIGH

Leigh hosted a past players get together welcoming local rivals Wigan and their supporters to Round Ash Park.
With a combination of fog and frost plus two days of incessant rain, the playing surface was in excellent condition thanks to the valiant efforts of our volunteer groundsmen who had been working on the field all week, often in pouring rain and hail.

From the kick off the hosts were quickly into their stride putting the Wigan defence under close scrutiny.
Two penalties awarded to Leigh, one on the ninth and one on the seventeenth minute were duly converted by Rob Drake to give Leigh a six point lead.
Mounting pressure on the Wigan twenty two with the Leigh forwards going through several phases and stretching the Wigan defence, it was no surprise when Olly Shepherd raced over for a converted try.
Consequently after this good start, complacency and poor ball retention took the edge off Leigh's game.
Wigan were slowly creeping back into it with the home side having to show their defensive capabilities to the full.

Half time Leigh 13 Wigan 0

The second half kicked off with Wigan raising their game and keeping Leigh on the back foot. They were eventually rewarded with a penalty to put them on the score sheet,
The Leigh pack spear headed by Iain Wood and David Penn made numerous forays into the Wigan twenty two, a penalty conceded by Wigan, five metres from their line gave quick thinking Graham Robinson the opportunity to play the ball and force his way over the line.

Adam Dyson then welcomed his return to the first team BY outpacing the Wigan defence to score under the posts, effortlessly converted by Rob Drake.
With the game now switching from end to end both sides were guilty of sloppy play with numerous knock- on's and forward passes, not normally associated with either Wigan or Leigh players.
A try was then scored by Ryan McKinstry, which was quickly followed by a superb team effort from Wigan, scoring wide out for a converted try.
On the final minute, Jimmy Wilkinson again showed his attacking flair with his fourteenth try of the season leaving the Wigan defence grasping at thin air as he strolled under the posts, Rob Drake again converting.

Final score, Leigh 37 Wigan 10.

The Leigh spectators then wandered off to the bar to console their many Wigan friends.
