LANCS TROPHY QUARTER FINAL
Leigh travelled without three first choice front rows, star winger Adam Dyson, and key flanker Chris Morgan. However, the players filling the breach, performed admirably, with special mention for prop Wayne McCabe who had an outstanding debut.
Leigh started strongly, ignoring early penalty chances, but found the home defence in stubborn mood. This forced a rethink, and full back Elliott Ryan converted twice as the home team continued to infringe. Heaton Moor then kicked a penalty, before the Leigh forwards took control. A clean catch and drive resulted in a try for the skipper Iain Wood. But Leigh were pegged back just before the interval, when Heaton Moor kicked a second penalty as the Leigh backs were caught offside.
The second period saw Leigh take control despite spirited resistance. Leigh forced a line out in the home 22 and scrum-half David Wood found Calvin Crompton coming back on the angle through a huge gap for a try near to the posts for Ryan to convert.
Heaton Moor kicked a third penalty, before Leigh sealed the game when the skipper forced his way over for his second try after prolonged forward pressure. Ryan added the extras with a fine conversion.
This was a second consecutive win on the road as a possible banana skin was avoided against determined opposition.
