Bulldogs hold nerve to overcome Waterloo

Following a week’s break the Bulldogs returned to action for their third consecutive home game.

The opponents Waterloo were once a powerhouse of the sport in the North, boasting alumni such as Ben Kay, Will Greenwood, Austin Healey and Paul Grayson.

The Bulldogs welcomed Jack and Lewis for their debuts, with guest referee Matthew Brown taking charge of his inaugural Bulldogs contest, with Andy Billinge acting as referee assessor.

Despite injury, illness and other sporting activities depleting the Bulldogs starting line up, they made a bright start with Will feeding James Q who almost opened the scoring in the corner in the 2nd minute.

The myrtle green, white and scarlet hooped visitors used their superior speed to continually move the ball around the pitch in the first 10 minutes.

A stunning break from Harrison G after 15 minutes with great hands from James Q, Stephen and Leo, once again got the Bulldogs agonisingly close.

With 25 mins of the game gone, the Bulldogs were awarded a penalty 20m out which Harrison G converted.

With seconds of the first half left, Harrison G fed Jimmy Q following a scrum who scorched through the defence for an excellent try. Harrison G converted the try.

HT: 10-0

With the half time break barely over, Stephen made a fine interception for a try under the posts but the referee disallowed the score for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Despite the Bulldogs dominance, sloppy defence gave Waterloo good field position which allowed them to score a try from a penalty with 7 minutes of the half played. The tricky conversion was successful.

As the game began to open up, Jack made a fine touchline run before the visitors hit back with a flowing move.

With the game in the balance, the Bulldogs reached for the self destruct button with a series of unforced errors.

With 7 minutes of the game left, Stephen found the line again following an excellent backs move. Noah narrowly missed the conversion.

With two minutes left, Waterloo scored out wide with the conversion unsuccessful.

The Bulldogs ground out the final moments for an excellent win.

FT: 15-12
